SUPERMAN JL:DOOM (2011) by philbourassa SUPERMAN JL:DOOM (2011) by philbourassa
As artists it can be fun to take note of how our art changes from year to year or, in some cases, from project to project. I typically dislike my own work, especially the older stuff, but I found these drawings I did of Superman from JL: Doom, drawn in 2011, and I thought I would share. I still really love the classic version of Superman, and hope to get another crack at him again one day.

I really love your work :D and found myself watch all the DC movies (doom, arkham assault, trapped in time, war, flashpoint paradoxe) over and over again :D it's true the style is different from one movie to another but heck it's good! :D the animation and the design are on point :) and the story itself, is a matter of tastes :) I liked this movie, it's one of my top 3

Hi Phil, I really love your work. You have the perfect style for animated Justice League. I loved your work on Doom and Young Justice, they're both Amazing!

I was wondering if I could ask, what would Supergirl look like in Young Justice? If you could draw her that would be great, but a simple description of her would also be great!

The fact you dislike your own work is baffling. I mean, it's not an uncommon trait for artists, but with what you do with the characters I love...it's beyond doing them justice. So it's weird thinking you don't like it. Then again, I guess that's how progress is made. If you're satisfied, I guess you stay where you are in your craft.

Yeah it's better not to fall in love with your own stuff. But thanks for the kind words.

I love classic superman too, the only issue I ever really had with his old costume was the length of his cape. I never was fond of the mid calf length, I like it to be longer.  Also the size of his Shield, some artists made it way too big. Yours is perfect here though.

I've always been a huge superhero fan, but unlike most fans, I fell in love with the animated shows than the comics. Your style is my favorite and most inspired.  Clean but detailed. Whether new or old versions, I really hope to see more. Can't wait for Son of Batman!

Were our own worst critic but its always gratifying to find an old piece we still treasure or can at least look back to see how far we've come.

You can't go wrong with classic Superman. It's a visual that's going to be around for a long time because that's what classics tend to do. Hell, he's been around for over 70 years already. I see the newer costumes as a phase that will work itself out. Sometimes you have to let the rebellious teen get into trouble and experience a taste of the real world. In this case, the New 52 version will come home, completely hammered, and the classic costume will be waiting for him... after he sobers up, of course.  :superman:

You gave him this dorky, goody-two-shoes, Adonis look that just makes a person want to puke.
In other words, you did him perfectly. :)

The version of Superman used in Doom was one of my personal favorites; I think it really struck true to the character.

The design style you used for Doom and Young Justice created (with respect to Bruce Timm and all the other incredible artists who have brought their hand to the animated DCU over the years) easily the most outstanding interpretations of these characters ever seen on screen.

They just looked so exceptionally cool and each had subtle nuances that made each of them unique and fit their Heroic stature, archetype, and personality to a tee.

While still visually outstanding, I'm a little disappointed that you were asked (or, to be fair, may have chosen) to pull away a bit for the New-52 films, as seen with 'War' and the forthcoming Damien film.

Alas that it's unlikely Warners/DC will ever revisit YJ or the Universe depicted in 'Doom (which I've always believed to be one and the same) so that we might see icons like the version of Superman above again.

I love your work and your style. We're always our own worst critics, right? :)

And yeah. I enjoy your style of Superman. Who knew it was so hard to get an iconic character... just right, right? ;)

yeah. i totally agree. after coming back to drawing after a 15year break and trying to draw iconic characters (never tried before for some reason) i realized pretty quickly that we put expectations of what we want to see from these characters, on them. so we have to live up to our own expectations AND the fans/viewers. yikes. i never understood that before this experimenting. :)

luckily, you're doing just fine ;). thanks again for sharing your talent.

nice lean superman. I think this design would help a lot when it comes to his mobility vs his strength. I like a fast moving and flexible Superman which you seem to do a fantastic job of portraying.

Most artists (anyone creative really, including writers and even chefs) don't like the work they do, forever seeing the flaws that only they know about. I suppose that sense of self-criticism and perfectionism are how you truly know you're an artist. XD

 :shakepaintbrush:

Anyway, I enjoyed Doom, both the story and artwork, and I liked this version of Superman a lot. Something about the design takes me back to my childhood, coming home from school and watching the first Batman cartoon. I think in Doom it was also one of the first times I liked Green Lantern.
